Old Windsor Prison
We married too young, but we wouldn't listen, We were too blind in love to see. I knew that I would love her forever, And she swore that she loved only me. CHORUS: I sit here alone in old Windsor Prison. These four stone walls seem to say, "Hey You took the life of your darling, so listen, You'll be here until your dying day." For a few short years we were happy together, Then she started drifting apart. She started running 'round, and staying late downtown, And left me at home with a jealous heart. CHO Now I look through the bars of this cold, lonely jail cell, And I think of the thing I have done. I can't sleep 'cause her memory is there waiting for me, And I curse the quick hand that held the gun. CHO

Up From Birmingham
She was dressed in silk and lace, Long red hair framed her face, With a voice like honey that reeked of Alabam'. "What's a girl do here for fun? This town closes with the sun, Not like the nights down in Birmingham. "You know, you ain't bad lookin', Flash. Have you got a car and some cash? What say we go find some trouble and pay the price?" I should have turned and run while I could, But, man! She sure looked good, So I just smiled and said, "Honey, choose your vice." CHO CHORUS: Work that road, feel that whip, Watch that guard with the shotgun hip, He's got an itchy finger and he don't give a damn. See those scars, feel the pain, From wearing that ball and chain, For a cold-hearted woman up from Birmingham. We hit every place in town, Till my money was near gone, Then she said, "Let's buy a bottle and take a little ride." Then she kissed me and said, "I'll bet, This'll be a night you won't forget." So we drove to the liquor store and went inside. She put a gun to his head, Then she shot that poor man dead. She grabbed the cash, then smiled at me so sweet. "Flash, you're as dumb as a post. Still, I liked you better than most." Then she slipped out the back and dropped the gun at my feet. CHO

Greensboro Dam
We were to wed on the sixteenth of May, When the snow in the fields would all melt away. She was my girl, only sixteen of age, When a stranger from town took her away. CHORUS: I'll climb myself up, hand over hand, Life is so blue, she found a new man. Her memory fades the higher I stand, As I throw myself from the Greensboro Dam. I went to her house and I knocked on her door. Her mother said, "Please, don't you come here no more, She is my girl and she's found a new man. For tomorrow she'll wed, she's giving her hand. CHORUS Oh, troubles abound in my worried mind. It tortures my soul, I thought her too kind. Comforting words, I pushed them away. Oh, come back to me, I prayed she would stay. CHORUS

Lonesome Like A Train
I'm walking round the house for the last time, To look for things I might have left behind. Though each room is bare, it seems that she's still there. It's just a trick that my heart plays on my mind. My bags are all packed and waiting by the door. If I don't leave soon, I'm sure to miss my train. I'm walking 'round the house picking memories off the floor. It's all she left when she left me again. CHORUS: The engine leaves the station with a low and mournful sigh, The whistle is crying out her name, The rhythm of the wheels seems to echo her goodbye. There's nothing sounds like lonesome like a train. I'm staring out the window at the darkness, And the house lights flashing by in the rain. I'm looking for the reasons that she left me, But all I see is my reflection in the pane. This train takes me further from my baby. I'll miss her till they lay me six feet deep. I can't face my tomorrows, 'cause they all look like today. I wish this train would rock me off to sleep. CHO

In One Door And Out The Other
CHORUS: In one door and out the other, You laughed as you ran out of sight. You said there was me and no other, For those lies you told me last night. Turn out the lights and you are gone. It never fails you see. You can't be caged like a wild bird, baby, So that you'll fly from me. CHORUS Now that the moon is rising, I wait for you by the door. Like the smoke from our little cabin, baby, You just travel more and more. CHORUS

Moving On
As we reach the end of life's long, weary road, We say goodbye to the friends we have known. And likewise to family we must bid farewell, As we cross that last bridge alone, Where we will meet with the things that we've done, And with the words that we've said. We'll be judged there as we were here on earth, By the deeds of the life that we've led. CHORUS: I'm moving on, (I'm moving on,) I'll soon be gone, (I'll soon be gone,) I'll leave this world behind, I'm moving on. Shed no tears, (shed no tears,) When I'm not here, (when I'm not here,) I won't be dead, (I won't be dead) just moving on. Sing me no hymns, no sad, mournful songs, Send me no fragrant bouquets. Think instead of the good I have done, As through life I've made my way. Build me no monument, no carved tombstone grand, The only tribute that I need, Is one kind deed that you do for your neighbor, That will help him to succeed. CHO

By Your Side
If I were on some desert island, Or adrift on some faraway sea, I'd find my way back to you, come what may, While my last breath still lingered in me. CHORUS: I'd cross the mountains in winter, I'd swim the deep, raging tides. I'd cross desert sands for the touch of your hand, My darling, to be by your side. If I were a king or some rich man, I'd buy you treasures untold But this poor man can bring to you none of those things, All I offer is a ring of plain gold. CHO My darling, when I am an old man, And time is swift passing me by, I'll thank God above for the gift of your love, And the time that we spent, you and I. CHO

From Here To California
She had the body of an angel, Wrapped around a heart made of stone. Once I thought I couldn't live without her. Now I can't wait until she's gone. CHORUS: I'd rather drink muddy water. I'd rather sleep out in a hollow log. I'd rather crawl from here to California, Than be treated like her dirty dog. I wish to the Lord I'd never met her, And seen her blue and sparkling eyes. I'd rather be dead or lying in some jail, Than have heard her sweet, loving lies. CHO She's a cruel and a mean-hearted woman. She's a devil wearing high-heeled shoes. She took my heart and tore it all apart, Left me here to sing these heart-broke blues. CHO

Lift Me Up
I can't see beyond these prison walls. The time is waning and it's getting might small. When the warden shuts the door and he turns the key, Lift me up and over, and the Lord will set me free, Set me free, and the Lord will set me free. When the darkness comes, I listen to these walls. I hear the others crying, and I feel the tears that fall. If I had to die, my wish would surely be, Lift me up and over, and the Lord will set me free, Set me free, and the Lord will set me free. Crying like an angel, bluer than the dusk. Darkness is my only friend, no one can I trust. If I were in heaven, you know I'd surely see. Lift me up and over, and the Lord will set me free, Set me free, and the Lord will set me free. Set me free, and the Lord will set me free.

Fare You Well, Georgia
The first time I saw her, I felt myself fall. My heart and soul were at her beck and call. My life and my freedom, and all that I have, I'd willingly give in exchange for her love. CHORUS: She told me goodbye and she went away. She broke my heart and I cannot stay. So goodbye, my friends, my time here is o'er, Fare you well, Georgia, you'll see me no more. Her love was like the first bright flowers of May, And just as quickly, it faded away. In the last days of summer, a new love she found, And left my heart shattered and cold on the ground. CHO They say that time heals broken hearts, But there's so many pieces, I don't know where to start. And so I'll take this last journey alone. Friends, don't forget me when I'm dead and gone. CHO

Three Chord Jones
Early morning, but the place was pretty crowded, The old man caught my eye, said "Here's an empty seat. Son, pull up a chair, I was just leavin'. Get some coffee, take a load off of your feet. "You hear that song they're playing on the radio? Well, I don't mean to be unkind. If radio calls that 'hot new country', I call it... well, you just never mind. "I don't listen anymore to country radio, I can't stand to hear that rock'n'roll with hats. Give me Bill Monroe and old Hank Williams, Play me some Webb Pierce and Lester Flatt. "Son, I'll tell you how I see it, From where I sit, way back here in this booth, Ol' Harlan Howard got it right the first time: A country song's just three chords and the truth. CHORUS: I've got a three chord jones, I like 'em simple and plain. I like my lovesongs full of heartaches and pain. I like them cheatin', lying, leavin', cryin' songs that put a chill in your bones. I like 'em good and country. I've got a three chord jones. "Now it's all about their looks and not their talent. They wear tight jeans, or a dress cut down to here Half of 'em can't even play a guitar, They'll mostly be forgotten in a year. "They all look alike and one sounds like the other. Somewhere, Nashville lost its very soul. You can give 'em hats and dress 'em all like cowboys, But, in the end, they're still singing rock'n'roll. "Boy, I surely miss the old days, When they sang a song, it stayed sung. I miss hearing Loretta on the radio, And Kitty Wells and Johnny Cash and Faron Young. "Mister, I'll leave you to your coffee, I guess I've bent your ear for far too long. But remember to look beyond the smoke and mirrors. Country's all about the singer and the song." CHORUS

Breaking Ties
CHORUS: Well, I'm breaking ties with my long lost lover, And I'm stepping out with you. Cause we can't revive our love for one another, And heal a heart that's blue. You know I've been mistreated, And I'm down and blue. You get just what you've asked for, And give me nothing new. CHORUS When you left, you walked right out that door, Said that we were through, Said you found another kind of love. Well, honey, I know that it's true. CHORUS
